Commercial Solar’s Turning Point: Why 2026 Is the Year Australian Businesses Finally Go Solar

Commercial Solar’s Turning Point: Why 2026 Is the Year Australian Businesses Finally Go Solar

The Missing Middle Finally Gets Government Attention

For years, Australia’s solar revolution has been a tale of two extremes: millions of households with rooftop panels and massive utility-scale solar farms. Commercial and industrial rooftops—the “missing middle”—have remained largely untapped, despite offering vast usable space. That changes on October 1, 2026, when the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) eligibility threshold expands from 100 kW to 1 MW.

How Much Can Businesses Actually Save?

The financial implications are substantial. Under the expanded SRES, a 250 kW solar system could receive a discount of approximately $68,000, while a 500 kW system could receive around $136,000. For larger installations approaching 1 MW, the Federal Government estimates upfront cost reductions of nearly $200,000. These discounts effectively provide around 20% savings on medium-scale solar installations, dramatically improving project payback periods.

The Commercial Solar Paradox

Commercial solar presents an obvious appeal: warehouses, factories, and shopping centres consume substantial electricity during daylight hours—exactly when solar generates power. Yet adoption has lagged. The challenges include higher capital requirements compared to residential systems, more complex installation logistics, and shorter business tenancy cycles that complicate investment horizons. The SRES expansion directly addresses the capital barrier, making the financial case far more compelling.

State-Level Incentives Amplify Federal Support

The federal changes are complemented by state-level programs. New South Wales is introducing new battery activities from September 1, 2026, while Victoria already offers additional incentives for eligible 30 kW to 200 kW commercial and industrial solar systems through Victorian Energy Upgrades. This layered support creates a patchwork of opportunities that savvy entrepreneurs can navigate to maximise returns.

The Untapped Potential: 80 GW of Commercial Rooftop Capacity

The Federal Government estimates that technical solar potential across commercial, industrial, and agricultural rooftops could exceed 80 GW. Currently, the commercial solar market sits at approximately 5.6 GW installed capacity, compared to 22 GW for residential rooftop solar. This gap represents an enormous growth opportunity for solar installers, energy consultants, and businesses seeking to reduce operational costs while enhancing sustainability credentials.
